    Electricity suppliers fearing a messy transition to low-carbon energy are having their worst fears confirmed, and energy users fear they will be the ones who pay.

    Early closure dates have been announced this year for more than 7.7 gigawatts of coal power generation capacity, about one-third of the total in the National Electricity Market, in addition to those advised last year.
