Climate activists block roads across Berlin during rush hour

PARTS of Berlin were brought to a standstill for a tenth day running yesterday as climate activists blocked roads during the morning rush hour.

Members of the group Last Generation glued themselves to the road, causing long traffic jams for commuters. It calls for stronger action to reduce emissions, including introductions of speed limits on German motorways.

Public reactions were mixed, with some cars honking in support and passers-by offering food and water, while others yelled that the activists were “terrorists” and “scum.”

The effectiveness of highly disruptive protests by climate activists is disputed, with Last Generation saying they grab public attention and raise awareness.

Britain’s environmental alliance Extinction Rebellion announced a shift away from such tactics at the start of the year, saying it would focus on larger-scale peaceful protests — yet a three-day London rally and sit-in called The Big One last weekend was largely ignored by mainstream media despite attracting tens of thousands.
